Consultant and Former Director of the Arabic and Translation Studies Division (ATS), School of Continuing Education (SCE), the American University in Cairo (AUC). A professional translator, interpreter and trainer who has given more than 500 train the trainer workshops. Mr. Hamdy is particularly distinguished in the fields of translation linguistics, legal translation, contract drafting and the language of religion. He has given many workshops at the Commercial Arbitration Centers in Bahrain, Dubai and Egypt, and participated and submitted papers in international conferences in Italy, Morocco and the UK on translation and teaching methodology, translating holy texts, training the trainer and teaching legal translation.

Part I
THE CANONS OF CONSTRUCTION AND IMPACT ON LEGAL DRAFTING IN ARABIC AND ENGLISH
القواعد الحاكمة لتفسير المستندات القانونية وأثر ذلك في الصياغة القانونية بالعربية والإنجليزية

A 10-workshop program for 30 hours on the canons of construction and impact on legal drafting. A deep investigation is made in the rules governing good and bad drafting in English and Arabic and how to guarantee equal authenticity in the translated version. The whole methodology of the program is predicated on a “Practice and Learn” approach in each 3-hour session of the program study guide.

*Learning Outcomes:
By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

1.1 analyze a written text for syntactic relationships.
1.2 read well for normal and non-normal phrasing.
1.3 avoid reading what is pre-conceived but not expressed clearly.
2.1 get the meaning expressed by the language relationships
2.2 measure a translation accurately.
2.3 use the assessment rubric.
3.1 expand intuition into cognitively-based rules.
3.2 apply the correct transfer strategy.
3.3 preclude translation errors.
4.1 use some useful translation techniques.
4.2 employ some useful problem-solving strategies.
4.3. respond quickly to some basic techniques.
5.1 comply with the rules of good rendering.
5.2 use the features characteristic of Arabic.
5.3 use the features characteristic of English
6.1 achieve a communicatively effective inter-lingual transfer.
7.1 go to the right source when needed.
8.1 defend one’s translation so long as it is correct.

Part II
The Linguistic Framework for Drafting Laws and Contracts in Arabic and English Advanced Practice
الإطار اللغوي لصياغة القوانين والعقود في العربية والإنجليزية
"تدريب متقدم"
A 10-workshop program for 30 hours on the linguistic framework governing the language of law and contract drafting in Arabic and English. Through authentic examples of contrastive analysis, participants are exposed to the rules governing legal drafting as well as legal terminology in English and Arabic. The program further serves as a survey course for all recommended references and related form books.

* Learning Outcomes:
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

1.1 describe general features of legal language.
1.2 identify legal loopholes resulting from inaccurate and/or intentional language.
1.3 identify semantic principles governing legal language.
2.1 use formal legal vocabulary.
2.2 use Law Latin and Law French.
3.1 apply the correct transfer strategy
3.2 produce equivalent syntactic relationships
3.3 use accurate translation measurability criteria
3.4 achieve original composition in the target language
4.1 discriminate graphetically and graphologically marked lexemes.
4.2 produce legal lexical equivalents.
4.3 produce standard legal syntactic structures.
4.4 rewrite translated documents in standard legal format.
4.5 revise translated documents.

TRANSLATING LAWSUITS, LITIGATION PROCEDURES AND MATTERS THERETO RELATED Arabic/English Selected Texts
ترجمة القضايا والأحكام وما يتصل بهما من مستندات

A 10-workshop program for 30 hours on how to translate legal documents, court rulings and related instruments into English. A special emphasis is given to the issue of the cultural barriers and how to overcome problems of non-lexicalizability in the translated versions. Various revised and unrevised versions of such translations are used for contrastive analysis and practice. The Egyptian context is given top priority in all legal instruments of the study guide.
